The scientific goal of the JET Collaboration is to provide complete and realistic calculations of jet, direct photon and dilepton production associated with the high-density medium formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Such calculations require an improved treatment of jet-medium interaction as well as the development and utilization of the state-of-art models for the evolution of the dense medium based on relativistic viscous hydrodynamics combined with parton and hadron cascades.

 

One of the JET Collaboration’s scientific programs is to provide training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with annual summer schools on theoretical techniques that are required to carry out many of the proposed studies. This is the first of the JET Summer Schools that we plan to hold in the next five years. We will focus in this first JET Summer School on the basics of perturbative QCD and jet propagation in medium with the following lectures:

 

*      Feng Yuan: The Basics of Perturbative QCD      

*      Jeff Owens: Introduction to Higher Order Calculations in Perturbative QCD

*      Jianwei Qiu: Twist expansion and jet propagation in medium

*      Ivan Vitev: Jet propagation in the opacity expansion approach

*      Mateusz Ploskon: Jet production in heavy-ion collisions

*      J. Frantz: Photon and gamma-hadron production in heavy-ion collisions

 

The theoretic lectures will be 4x1.0 hours each with tutorials/exercises and two experimental talks will be about 1 hour each. Knowledge of field theory and basics of QCD are required for the attendants.  In addition to lectures, we will organize a session of contributed talks by the participants. The attendance is limited to 40 participants and priorities will be given to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Financial support for local expenses will be provided to a limited number of participants who apply before the deadline, April 3, 2010.

 

The summer school will be followed by a one-day symposium on “Jet and Electromagnetic Tomography of Dense Matter” to kick off the start of the JET Collaboration. Please indicate whether you would like to attend this symposium when you register for the summer school.
